Summary

The video discusses the practical application of Framework Analysis (FRA) using NVivo software, focusing on its methodology and tools. It highlights the importance of understanding the foundational work of Rich and Spencer, emphasizes the inductive nature of FRA, and provides guidance on coding, thematic development, and creating an audit trail. The tutorial includes downloadable resources and encourages viewers to engage with additional materials for a comprehensive understanding of the analysis process.

Highlights

  • 📚 Understanding Framework Analysis: Framework Analysis, developed by Rich and Spencer in 1994, is an inductive process aimed at generating themes and sub-themes from qualitative data without a pre-existing framework.
  • 💻 Using NVivo for FRA: The video provides a modified tutorial for NVivo, specifically for Framework Analysis, and offers downloadable project files for both Windows and Mac users to facilitate practical application.
  • 🔍 Five Stages of Framework Analysis: The process includes initial coding, identifying a thematic framework, indexing, charting, and mapping/interpretation, with a focus on maintaining transparency and rigor in the research process.
  • 📝 Creating an Audit Trail: Emphasizes the importance of documenting all stages of the analysis to enhance credibility and trustworthiness in research findings, including using project journals and memos.
  • 📊 Utilizing Framework Matrices: Demonstrates how to create and use framework matrices in NVivo to summarize data, allowing for effective cross-case and in-case analysis while integrating demographic information.

Audit Trail

Here is a link to a video demonstrating a completed audit trail. The data analysis method being demonstrated is Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA) but it could be applied to any method and almost all PhD or Doctoral level research projects require an audit trail as a means of demonstrating rigour in data analysis. while the video shows the various outputs, it does not demonstrate how to make such outputs because it would make the video extremely long; it is designed to give you some ideas as to what you may want to produce; however, the page I’m linking you to below, contains links beneath the video to other videos and resources mentioned in the video where they are demonstrated in practical terms should you wish to see those details: https://qdatraining.com/nvivo-audit-trail-codebook/

How to Create Codes; Categories of Codes & Themes in NVivo

This video will help you understand how to manage codes, categories of codes and themes in NVivo; a process that almost all recognised qualitative data analysis methods require transitioning through for primary research data analysis:

Accelerate your Literature Review with NVivo

I’ve inserted links to four papers that discuss NVivo in the context of working with literature and a link to the webinar below as discussed. I hope these are helpful in informing you about possibilities in this regard:

Silvana’s paper was written in 2002 so the software is dated but the concepts it discusses are just as relevant today. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

And this one from 2018 by Booth Lamb looks at the pedagogical approach to students:

This one by Bandara, (2006) is also older in terms of NVivo but the ideas are all just as relevant and technically possible today: Click here
